Antenne a basso profilo

Horizontal wire antennas over a ground plane suffer from a fundamental limitation concerning the distance from the antenna to the ground plane. The optimal distance for the antenna is a quarter wavelength from the ground plane, high radiation resistance being the figure of merit. If the separation is reduced, the image currents on the ground plane eventually cancel out all radiation from the antenna.
High-impedance surfaces has been proposed to overcome this limitation.
